Happy Birthday Frida Kahlo.
Personally, she is one of my favorite artist. Her inspiration a many times came from her internal pain and suffering recreated through the symbolism in her paintings. A lot of her pain dealt directly with her health, physical challenges, and sexuality. In this painting Self Portrait with Necklace of Thorns she has unraveled Christ’s crown of thorns and wears them around her neck to present herself as a Christian martyr. The thorns digging in her neck symbolize how painful the divorce with her husband and fellow artist Diego Rivera. Hanging from the necklace is a dead hummingbird resemblant of Frida’s unibrow. Hummingbirds were used to bring good luck in love. Seeing how the hummingbird is dead it was proven faulty. The black cat over her shoulder the represents bad luck and death is waiting in anticipation to pounce the hummingbird. On her other shoulder a representation of the devil a pet monkey given to her by Diego. In her hair are butterflies to represent ressurection. Unfortunately, Frida’s reality was too much for her and she eventually ended her life prematurely. Frida gave us timeless artworks that represent her reality and give us perspective into one of art’s most influential female artist.
