Republic of Benin - Fon Altar Staff
“Forged iron staffs were placed in Fon family shrines as memorials to the dead. This example comes from Ouidah, a coastal trading town whose culture was heavily influenced by freed Africans who returned from Brazil as traders and craftsmen. The platform tableau consists of a central figure with top hat and pipe, the honored ancestor. He is flanked by sacrificial animals, French flags, and a cross.”
